Dr. Husnain, M.Sc, mendapatkan gelar sarjana pertanian jurusan Ilmu Tanah pada tahun 1997 dari Universitas Andalas, Padang. Yang bersangkutan melanjutkan program S2 di Pasca Sarjana Universitas Andalas program studi Ilmu Tanah dari tahun 1997 hingga tahun 2000. Pada tahun 2001 mulai bergabung sebagai staf peneliti di Balai Penelitan Tanah. Kemudian pada tahun 2004 hingga 2006 mengambil program Master di bidang Ilmu Tanah dan Ekologi di Shimane University Jepang dilanjutkan dengan program doctoral (Ph.D) dimulai pada tahun 2006 hingga 2009 pada jurusan Ilmu Tanah dan Ekologi di The United Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tottori University, Jepang.

Yang bersangkutan pernah menjabat sebagai Ketua Kelti Kimia dan Kesuburan Tanah dan aktif sebagai peneliti. Telah mempublikasikan beberapa karya ilmiah yang diterbitkan dalam jurnal dan prosiding lokal dan internasional baik sebagai penulis utama maupun penulis pendukung. Saat ini Dr. Husnain, M.Sc. menjabat sebagai Kepala Balai Penelitian Tanah
